Memorial Illustrations

I was commissioned to create some Illustrations to commemorate a life, that by all accounts was very well lived. I was given some testimonials that were going be used at the memorial service/funeral and asked to Illustrate them. Rather than creating them by myself, I thought it would be a wonderful opportunity to collaborate with the family, so the children could see their contribution at the service and have a creative role to play.

We firstly used my trusted YES COLOURS and repurposed photography backdrops to spread the colour and vibrancy across the paper. After that we added Posca Pen Patterns.

Self expression was key and I was hoping that it would feel cathartic. There was no plan, just to cover all the paper and make it as bold and flowing as possible.

It was a great to not to be hindered by scale and I think the children had lots of fun! (Which distracted from the sad nature of the project)

We created splashes, stripes and wiggles and splatters. Words, statements, grids and dashes.

Once this was dry. I then cut the big paper into approximately A2 size sheets trying to get as much variation of the background as possible.

After this I wrote the testimonial statements onto the paper with black Posca Pen. I continued with the free-flow approach with a variation of text sizes and shapes

Once this layer was created I went in with more detail on top of the letters. I always find this part super relaxing and I can get carried away with the repetition.

Once this was done, I stabilised them by mounting them on foam board.

Once I had completed them all. I wrapped them in tissue paper and parcel paper to protect them on their journey.

I also photographed each so they could exist in the virtual world too and enjoy at a smaller scale.

It was such an honour to be involved with something so sensitive, but I hoped the colour and energy made the art work memorable, I think the collaborative element heightened this too.

Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you would like something similar.

Thank you very much
