Live Illustration captured in the moment-
WORKSHOP EDITION
Live illustration is a perfect way to gather insight and lived experience in a vibrant and energetic way.

The main objective remains the same, to capture as many testimonials, ideas and concepts as possible, right in that moment.

Live Illustration is utilised in many different settings most commonly in workshops that are either trying to improve a service or product.

Really listening and making sure peoples voices are heard, is central to my role. This is made easier through true public engagement and sensitive, considered lived experience research.
Variety of Outputs.
Option 1- Sharpies onto A3 Paper
My most frequent technique is drawing directly onto A3 paper with sharpies. This can easily be placed on my lap so I can easily move around the room as well as going into break out areas or to join particular groups. This aids flexibility and I can fully immerse myself in the sessions.
Illustrations can be pinned up in certain areas so the participants can see the narrative of the sessions come to life in real time.
Post event I can refine, colour and format the Illustrations. This will be done on my iPad with block colours (Brand colours if specified- see above)
This means the final outputs will be in either Jpeg or PNG and ready to share or pop into presentations. The black and white originals can be requested if desired.
Option 2- iPad throughout

It is also possible to capture all the content directly onto my iPad.
This lacks the theatre and engagement of seeing the Illustrations emerge onto the wall, however this is replaced by the ease of having the Illustrations instantly uploaded and the possibility of been viewed on a larger screen.
This lends itself well to product development, where sketches may be sent into research to see how consumers react to certain concepts.

Lots of these Illustrations created in this setting are confidential so unable to share! However many workshops of this nature in the last decade and beyond.
A more rendered, 3D “product sketch” approach can be achieved, but still in the energetic and fast style I am known for. These concepts can be refined for further rounds of research.
OPTION 3- Large Foam Boards or Reels of Paper.
This approach is perfect for public engagement when the set-up is in a community centre or on the street. It is viewed clearly from a distance, and it is an enticing mechanism for people to come and have their say. It is interactive so members of the public can come really close to the foam board and see the concepts, ideas and concerns emerge.
It also works well at conferences and events, documenting the narrative of the day. Keynote speakers, location, the atmosphere and energy can all be taken into consideration!
This option is the most theatrical and I really enjoy going with the flow and filling the board with as much information as possible.
Post event the boards can be photographed but also broken down into overarching themes and separate images that can be used to cement the researching findings or promote/showcase what was achieved at the event/conference/session.
This allows a more bitesize, refined output to accompany the busier, crowded and energetic board. These will be transparent background PNG ready to be used, shared and popped into presentations.

CONFERENCE EDITION.
(Although all options available)
Live Illustration at a conference is a perfect way to have a visual overview.
This can take place at the entrance- or also just outside the main conference theatre so a variety of speakers/activities can be recorded and as many visitors as possible can see and engage with the Illustrations.
There is also a possibility that the Illustrator can be attached to a particular stand taking in the insight, conversations and themes linked to that business or organisation.
There can be an option for quick fire drawings to be shared with guests, so they are able to take away something unique from the stand.
Outcomes can be shared instantaneously on socials creating a buzz and further engagement.
Illustrations can be created onto large foam boards, or A3 paper that is then pinned up onto walls.
Content can be created virtually on an iPad, but this misses some of the theatre of having a human draw intuitively in the moment, especially as an antidote to a fully tech filled setting.
Post event Illustrations can be further refined, by colouring and separating out key themes. Keynote speakers can see their sessions brought to life and I am happy for all content to be shared with credit.

I can adapt to a fast-moving environment, seeing where the insight and conversations are emerging! There is a possibility to make it extra engaging with the option for people to add their own thoughts and ideas.
There could be the “add your own” board alongside my board as in the there is a desire for participants to get creatively involved. (Whilst still maintaining a coherent Illustrative output that I am solely responsible for)
(Options for Posters and Rich Pictures to accompany?or stand alone for any of these projects)
